Missions and Outreach
On September 25, 1985, the Session adopted the following Mission Statement:

The Mission of the Community Presbyterian Church of Mountainside, NJ is to preach the Word of God, to increase the awareness and understanding of the Holy Spirit in our lives, to preserve and extend Christian attitudes and actions, and provide a witness to the love and power of our risen Lord, Jesus Christ.

This Ministry begins with Baptism, when the congregation assumes responsibility to the young for nurture, education and example, and continues as the church meets the spiritual, physical and psychological needs of its church family through all life's stages.

The Mission of our Church is to attract and care for new members of all ages, with particular emphasis on younger families and new residents.  We further believe that God calls us to be an active participant in causes which improve the quality of life in the community and further the Kingdom of God to the ends of the earth.

In ministry we seek to follow the example of Jesus Christ, being a source of strength and comfort to others, reflecting the acceptance, love, understanding and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
In keeping with Christ's calling and with the Mission Statement set forth by Session, CPC supports the following charitable organizations:
One Great Hour of Sharing - Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities.


Presbyterian Disaster Assistance - Recent strong earthquakes have affected the nations of Chile and Haiti. Your generous gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering allow an immediate response to disasters such as these.  For more information, click here.

Refugee Resettlement - Nearly 40 million people around the world are uprooted from their homes and communities by persecution and armed conflict. Part of the General Assembly mandate for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is “ … aid to refugees and displaced persons ...”   PDA works with the Office of Immigration Issues, located in the Office of the General Assembly and the Immigration and Refugee Program of Church World Service (CWS/IRP) to fulfill this mandate and to show hospitality to strangers — that is, to immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers and other uprooted people in the United States and around the world.  For more information, click here.
Self-Development of People - The National Committee on the Self-Development of People (SDOP) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has approved grants totaling $269,930 to 13 self-help projects in the United States. Money for the grants comes from the PC (USA)’s One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering.  For more information, click here.
Elizabethport Presbyterian Center - The mission of the Elizabethport Presbyterian Center is to be a witness to the caring concern of Christ by providing social services, childcare, youth programs, educational support, and ethical and spiritual guidance to meet the needs of the Elizabethport community.  For more information, click here.
Community Food Bank of NJ - The mission of the Community Food Bank of NJ is to fight hunger and poverty in New Jersey by assisting those in need and seeking long term solutions.  We will engage, educate, and empower all sectors of society in the battle.  For more information, click here.
Habitat for Humanity -  Habitat for Humanity International seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  For more information, click here.
Johnsonburg Presbyterian Center - The mission of Johnsonburg Presbyterian Center is to provide a place apart where all people can experience God's love within a welcoming Christian community.  For more information, click here.
Institute of Music for Children - The Institute's mission is to teach and enhance artistic appreciation and expression in the children of our community through professional instructors and role models in a safe and nurturing environment.  For more information, click here.
Homefirst Interfaith Housing & Family Services - Homefirst is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the homeless. Valuing our strong partnership with the faith community, we promote personal development, independence and self-sufficiency, as well as community building for safe and stable neighborhoods through a broad continuum of housing and related social service programs.  For more information, click here.
Food Baskets for the Hungry - Each Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, CPC congregants collaborate with the local Boy Scout Chapter 177 to deliver food baskets to the hungry in Elizabeth.  This ministry, begun by the late Rosa Floyd in 1968, continues to feed countless hungry families in the greater Elizabeth area.  To read a news article on Rosa's life, click here.  
Caring for the homeless at Willow Grove Presbyterian Church - Several times a year, our members team with members from the Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains, NJ to feed and house the homeless.  For more information on Willow Grove's programs and ministries, click here.
